The carpal bones are the eight small bones that make up the wrist (or carpus) that connects the hand to the forearm. This term derives its meaning from the Latin  and the Greek  (karpós), both meaning "wrist." In human anatomy, the main role of the wrist is to facilitate effective positioning of the hand and powerful use of the extensors and flexors of the forearm, and the mobility of individual carpal bones increase the freedom of movements at the wrist.

Die Handwurzelknochen (Karpalknochen, Ossa carpi, lat. os, Mehrzahl ossa, ‚Knochen‘ und altgr. καρπός karpos ‚Handwurzel‘) gehören zu den kurzen Knochen (Ossa brevia) des Skeletts. Beim Menschen besteht jede Handwurzel (Carpus) aus acht Handwurzelknochen, die in zwei Reihen zu jeweils vier Knochen aufgeteilt sind.

En anatomía, el carpo es una compuesta por ocho huesos  que forman el esqueleto de la muñeca. Se disponen en dos filas: proximal y distal.

De handwortelbeentjes of ossa carpi zijn de botjes die gelegen zijn tussen het spaakbeen en de ellepijp aan de laterale zijde en de middenhandsbeentjes aan de mediale zijde. De botjes zijn zogenaamde ossa brevia, korte beenderen.

Le carpus chez les tétrapodes est le groupe d'os du poignet entre le radius, l'ulna et le métacarpe. Il désigne plus particulièrement la région du corps humain qui correspond au poignet. Il articule l'avant-bras avec le métacarpe.
