A cartridge (also called a round or a shell) is a type of ammunition packaging a bullet or shot, a propellant substance (usually either smokeless powder or black powder) and a primer within a metallic, paper, or plastic case that is precisely made to fit within the firing chamber of a firearm. The primer is a small charge of an impact-sensitive or electric-sensitive chemical mixture that can be located at the center of the case head (centerfire ammunition), inside a rim (rimfire ammunition), or in a projection such as in a pinfire or teat-fire cartridge. Military and commercial producers continue to pursue the goal of caseless ammunition. A cartridge without a bullet is called a blank. One that is completely inert (contains no active primer and no propellant) is called a dummy.

Eine Patrone (von für Form, Muster, Modell) fasst die zum Abfeuern eines Geschosses (Projektil oder Granate) aus einer Feuerwaffe notwendigen Komponenten in einer Einheit zusammen.

Een eenheidspatroon (kortweg patroon) van een vuurwapen omvat alles wat nodig is om een schot te lossen: de kogel, de kruitlading, het slaghoedje en de omringende huls. De huls geeft aan de patroon zijn typische vorm, en is geheel of gedeeltelijk gemaakt van messing, soms van staal, aluminium, kunststof, papier of zelfs nitrocellulose; messing heeft de voorkeur omdat het elastischer is dan staal. Sedert de Eerste Wereldoorlog worden hulzen van militaire munitie soms van staal gemaakt omdat messing vele andere toepassingen heeft, schaarser en dus ook duurder is.

Le mot étui désigne l'élément d'une munition qui solidarise tous les autres, et abrite la charge propulsive et l'amorce. Il désigne ce composant lorsqu'il est destiné à une arme individuelle, donc de calibre inférieur à 14 (arme contemporaine) ou 20 (arme ancienne) millimètres. Le mot douille est préféré pour les autres armes, en particulier les fusils à âme lisse, et les obus de pièces d'artillerie.
