chalcedony

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. These are both silica minerals, but they differ in that quartz has a trigonal crystal structure, while moganite is monoclinic. Chalcedony's standard chemical structure (based on the chemical structure of quartz) is SiO₂ (silicon dioxide).

Der Chalcedon (latinisierte Form des griechischen χαλκηδών) oder in eingedeutschter Schreibung Chalzedon ist eine faserige, mikrokristalline Gefügevarietät des Minerals Quarz.

Chalcedoon of chalcedon is een halfedelsteen en een variëteit van het mineraal kwarts. De kleur is bijna wit tot lichtblauw of duifblauw, vaak met strepen. De steen wordt ook gevonden in de kleuren appelgroen (chrysopraas genoemd), roze, rood (variëteit carneool), bruin (sarder genoemd) en koperkleur.

La calcédoine est une roche composée de cristallites de quartz, dont la taille est comprise entre 50 et , agencées en fibres. Il s'agit d'une phase de la silice. Si elle peut être uniquement composée de quartz, elle contient le plus souvent une proportion de moganite, une autre phase de la silice. Ce n'est donc pas une espèce minérale reconnue par l'IMA puisqu'il ne s'agit pas d'un minéral mais d'un agencement spécifique de cristallites du minéral quartz.

Chalcedon – pospolity, szeroko rozpowszechniony minerał, odmiana skrytokrystalicznej krzemionki (SiO₂) o włóknistej strukturze, zbudowanej z kwarcu i moganitu. Nazwa pochodzi od miasta Chalcedon – położonego nad Bosforem w Azji Mniejszej i dotyczy właściwie tylko mlecznych lub opalizujących okazów. Tworzy wiele barwnych odmian o zastosowaniu gemmologicznym.
