Personal property is generally considered property that is movable, as opposed to real property or real estate. In common law systems, personal property may also be called chattels or personalty. In civil law systems, personal property is often called movable property or movables – any property that can be moved from one location to another. This term is in distinction with immovable property or immovables, such as land and buildings. Movable property on land, that which was not automatically sold with the land, included for example a larger livestock (wildlife and smaller livestock like chickens, by contrast, were often sold as part of the land). In fact the word cattle is the Old Norman variant of Old French chatel (derived from Latin capitalis, “of the head”), which was once synonymous with general movable personal property.

Fahrnis bezeichnet bewegliche Sachen, im Gegensatz zu den unbeweglichen Sachen (Immobilien). Dazu zählen alle Sachen, die weder Grundstücke noch Bestandteile von Grundstücken sind. Beweglich bezeichnet die natürliche Eigenschaft einer Sache. Fahrnisrecht bezeichnet das Sachenrecht der beweglichen Sachen im Gegensatz zum Liegenschaftsrecht. Fahrnisvollstreckung bezeichnet die Mobiliarzwangsvollstreckung.

La propriété personnelle (en anglais ) est un type de propriété hérité du droit romain qu'on retrouve aujourd'hui dans le système de droit anglais dit de Common law mais qui ne correspond à aucune classification française.

Lösöre, lös egendom som utgörs av fysiska föremål som kan flyttas. Man kan säga att lösöre är allt som man kan ta och springa iväg med. Lösöre är en underkategori av lös egendom som i sin tur helt enkelt är motsatsen till fast egendom. Bilar och fartyg är alltså lösöre.
