The chestnut group is a genus (Castanea) of eight or nine species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the beech family Fagaceae, native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Die Kastanien (Castanea) oder Edelkastanien sind eine Gattung in der Familie der Buchengewächse (Fagaceae). Die Gattung ist mit etwa zwölf Baum- und Straucharten in der nördlich gemäßigten Zone verbreitet. In Europa ist nur die Edelkastanie (Castanea sativa) heimisch.

Kastanje (Castanea) is een geslacht van loofbomen dat in Nederland niet autochtoon is. De bladeren hebben evenwijdig lopende nerven en een gezaagde bladrand.

La châtaigne est le fruit comestible du châtaignier. Les châtaignes non cloisonnées sont appelées des marrons, à ne pas confondre avec le marron d'Inde, qui est la graine toxique du marronnier d’Inde ou marronnier commun (Aesculus hippocastanum). La châtaigne fut longtemps la base de l'alimentation humaine dans des régions entières. On appelait d'ailleurs le châtaignier « l'arbre à pain » mais aussi « l'arbre à saucisses » car les châtaignes servaient aussi à l'alimentation des porcs.

Kasztan (Castanea Mill. ) – rodzaj roślin z rodziny bukowatych (Fagaceae Dumort.). W Europie (w tym także w Polsce jako roślina sadzona) występuje tylko kasztan jadalny (Castanea sativa), będący zarazem gatunkiem typowym rodzaju. Na całym świecie wyróżnianych jest 10–12 gatunków kasztanów rosnących w Azji wschodniej i Ameryce Północnej.
