A clan is a group of people united by actual or perceived kinship and descent. Even if lineage details are unknown, clan members may be organized around a founding member or apical ancestor. The kinship-based bonds may be symbolical, whereby the clan shares a "stipulated" common ancestor that is a symbol of the clan's unity. When this "ancestor" is non-human, it is referred to as a totem, which is frequently an animal. The word clan is derived from clann meaning children or progeny but not family in the Irish language and Scottish Gaelic languages. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word was introduced into English around the year 1425 as a label for the nature of the Scottish Highlands society. Clans in indigenous societies are likely to be exogamous, meaning that their members cannot marry one another. Clans preceded more centralized forms of community organization and government; they are located in every country. Members may identify with a coat of arms or other symbol to show they are an independent clan.

Ein Clan (Mehrzahl: Clans; von schottisch-gälisch clann „Kinder“) oder eingedeutscht Klan (Mehrzahl: Klane) war ursprünglich eine größere Familiengruppe in Schottland, die ein abgegrenztes Gebiet bewohnte und ihre Herkunft auf einen gemeinsamen Urahnen zurückführte (siehe Schottischer Clan). Davon abgeleitet versteht die Ethnologie oder Völkerkunde unter einem Clan bei ethnischen Gruppen und indigenen Völkern einen Familienverband, der sich zwar auf eine gemeinsame Herkunft bezieht, diese zumeist sagenhafte Abstammung aber nur ungenau oder widersprüchlich herleiten kann („fiktive Genealogie“). Daneben gibt es so genannte totemistische Clans, die ihre Zusammengehörigkeit durch eine gemeinsame (bisweilen kultische) Beziehung auf ein Totem (Tier, Pflanze oder Naturerscheinung) als ihrem Gruppen-Abzeichen herstellen.

Un clan es un grupo de personas unidas por lazos de parentesco y ascendencia, vinculado por la percepción de ser descendientes de un ancestro común. La denominación proviene del gaélico clann, que significa "hijo" o "descendiente". En algunos lugares, como la Escocia antigua, designaba al conjunto de miembros de los distintos grupos familiares. El término pasó al inglés hacia 1425, para denominar las organizaciones tribales de Irlanda y Escocia.

Un clan est un ensemble de familles associées par une parenté réelle ou fictive, fondée sur l'idée de descendance d'un ancêtre commun. Même si leur filiation exacte n'est pas connue, tous les membres d'un clan connaissent cette origine qui prend un caractère mythique. Des individus ou des familles étrangères peuvent être adoptés par un clan qui leur donne ses ancêtres, on parle alors d'affiliation ou de réaffiliation. Lorsque cet ancêtre est représenté mythiquement ou symboliquement par un animal, on parle de totémisme.
