Clock (Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput) is a gene encoding a basic helix-loop-helix-PAS transcription factor (CLOCK) that affects both the persistence and period of circadian rhythms. CLOCK functions as an essential activator of downstream elements in the pathway critical to the generation of circadian rhythms.

A clock is an instrument to indicate, keep, and co-ordinate time. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". A silent instrument missing such a striking mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece. In general usage today a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are often distinguished from clocks.

El gen Clock (de sus siglas en inglés "Circadian Locomotor Output Cycles Kaput") codifica una proteína implicada en la regulación de los ritmos circadianos y fue identificado por el grupo de Joseph Takahashi en 1997. La proteína CLOCK parece afectar tanto la persistencia como la duración de los ciclos circadianos. CLOCK es un factor de transcripción con un motivo hélice-bucle-hélice capaz de dimerizar in vivo con la proteína BMAL-1 y así transactivar la expresión de los genes Period y Timeless en Drosophila mediante su unión a las secuencias E-box de sus promotores. El complejo BMAL1-CLOCK también regula los genes del criptocromo (como Cry1 y Cry2) y los genes Period (como Per1, Per2 y Per3) en mamíferos. Este complejo BMAL1-CLOCK es a su vez regulado por la expresión de los genes Per y Cry.

El clock es la unidad de tiempo circular propia de la programación radiofónica. Generalmente su duración es de una hora. Cada clock tiene isoritmos: elementos que se repiten (la sigla de programa, el nombre de la emisora, saludos, publicidad) y que permiten reconocer la emisora fácilmente.
