Cnidaria () is a phylum containing over 10,000 species of animals found exclusively in aquatic (freshwater and marine) environments: they are predominantly marine species. Their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey. Their bodies consist of mesoglea, a non-living jelly-like substance, sandwiched between two layers of epithelium that are mostly one cell thick. They have two basic body forms: swimming medusae and sessile polyps, both of which are radially symmetrical with mouths surrounded by tentacles that bear cnidocytes. Both forms have a single orifice and body cavity that are used for digestion and respiration. Many cnidarian species produce colonies that are single organisms composed of medusa-like or polyp-like zooids (hence they are trimorphic), or both. Cnidarians' activities are coordinated by a decentralized nerve net and simple receptors. Several free-swimming Cubozoa and Scyphozoa possess balance-sensing statocysts, and some have simple eyes. Not all cnidarians reproduce sexually, with many species having complex life cycles of asexual polyp stages and sexual medusae. Some, however, omit either the polyp or the medusa stage.

Die Nesseltiere (Cnidaria; altgr.  knide ‚Nessel‘) sind einfach gebaute, vielzellige Tiere, die die Küsten, den Grund und das offene Wasser der Weltmeere und einige Süßgewässer bewohnen und durch den Besitz von Nesselkapseln gekennzeichnet sind. Bekannte Untergruppen sind Schirm- und Würfelquallen, die sessilen Blumentiere mit den Seeanemonen, Stein- und Weichkorallen sowie die vielgestaltigen Hydrozoen, zu denen auch die Staatsquallen und der in Bächen und Flüssen in Mitteleuropa heimische Süßwasserpolyp gehören. Sie umfassen derzeit über 11 000 rezente Arten. Einige Nesseltiere (z. B. Polypodium hydriforme und die Myxozoa) sind Parasiten geworden.

De neteldieren (Cnidaria) vormen een stam van het dierenrijk. De stam omvat de schijfkwallen, de kubuskwallen, de hydroïdpoliepen en de bloemdieren. Neteldieren leven allemaal in het water, de meeste leven in zee, maar er zijn ook groepen die in zoet water leven. Vaak wordt in plaats van neteldier het woord holtedier (Coelenterata) gebruikt om deze stam der dieren aan te geven. Dit wordt echter ontraden, omdat de benaming holtedieren niet alleen voor de neteldieren wordt gebruikt, maar ook voor de ribkwallen en vroeger ook voor sponsdieren.

Les cnidaires, ou embranchement des Cnidaria, sont des espèces animales relativement simples, spécifiques du milieu aquatique (marins à 99 %, 1 % de seulement). L'appellation vient du grec ancien  (knide, « ortie, urticant ») faisant allusion aux cellules urticantes caractéristiques de ces animaux (les cnidocytes ou cnidoblastes), le nom vernaculaire d'« orties de mer » étant donné par Aristote qui y regroupe les Acalèphes (méduses) et les Coralliaires. Le terme de cœlentérés (Coelenterata ou Coelentera) désignait autrefois ce groupe mais inclut aussi l'embranchement voisin des cténophores. Les cnidaires sont bien représentés dans les fossiles : on les trouve jusque dans le cambrien et peut-être même dès la faune d'Ediacara.
