Eine Kodifikation ist die systematische Zusammenfassung des für einen bestimmten Lebensbereich geltenden Rechts in einem zusammenhängenden Gesetzeswerk (Gesetzbuch). Sie hat den Anspruch, ihre Materie abschließend zu regeln. Ist die Zusammenstellung nicht systematisch geordnet, so spricht man von einer „Kompilation“.

Codificatie, letterlijk 'het maken van een boek', is op schrift gesteld recht, waaraan de overheid uitsluitende gelding (exclusieve werking) verleent. Door deze exclusiviteit verkrijgt de codificatie tevens de pretentie van volledigheid. Codificatie kan betrekking hebben op een bepaald rechtsgebied, bijvoorbeeld het privaatrecht.
