In mathematics, a coefficient is a multiplicative factor in some term of a polynomial, a series or any expression; it is usually a number, but in any case does not involve any variable of the expression. For instance in

the first two terms respectively have the coefficients 7 and -3. The third term 1.5 is a constant. The final term does not have any explicitly written coefficient, but is considered to have coefficient 1, since multiplying by that factor would not change the term. Often coefficients are numbers as in this example, although they could be parameters of the problem or any expression in these parameters. In such a case one must clarify which symbols represent variables and which ones represent parameters. Following Descartes, the variables are often denoted by , , ..., and the parameters by , , , ..., but it is not always the case. For example, if is considered as a parameter in the above expression, the coefficient of is , and the constant coefficient is .

Ein Koeffizient ((neu)lat. coefficiens/coëfficiens, eine Substantivierung des PPA von lat. coefficere „mitwirken“, gebildet von Franciscus Vieta; auch Beizahl, Vorzahl) ist eine zu einem anderen rechnerischen Ausdruck als Faktor hinzugefügte Zahl oder Variable. Der Koeffizient kann ein Parameter oder eine Kennzahl (Physik, Ökonomie) sein. In der Analysis tritt er in Monomen auf.

De term coëfficiënt wordt voornamelijk gebruikt in exacte wetenschappen, waaronder de wiskunde, de natuurkunde en de scheikunde, om een als constant beschouwde grootheid, zoals een parameter, een factor  of een kengetal, aan te duiden die voorkomt als vermenigvuldiger in een product met een variabele. Toepassingen ervan vindt men in bijvoorbeeld de biologie en de economie. Coëfficiënt betekent letterlijk "mede-uitwerker", naar het Latijnse efficere, uitwerken. Viète introduceerde de term in 1592.

Dans une expression mathématique, un coefficient est un nombre (ou un symbole représentant un nombre) qui vient en facteur d'une variable ou d'une fonction d'une ou plusieurs variables. Les coefficients sont (ou représentent) le plus souvent des nombre réels mais ces nombres peuvent être complexes, rationnels, etc. Si ce n'est pas clair d'après le contexte on le précise : coefficients réels, coefficients complexes, coefficients rationnels, etc.

Ordet koefficient används inom bland annat matematik och fysik för att beteckna en faktor i en produkt, i sammanhang där övriga faktorer anses bestämma produktens "karaktär", medan koefficienten påverkar dess "storlek".
