Die Kohorte (lat.  „umfriedeter Raum“) war im Römischen Reich eine militärische Einheit, insbesondere eine Untereinheit der römischen Legion.

Een cohors (mv.: cohortes, vandaar het Nederlandse cohort(e)) was een indeling in het Antieke Romeinse leger. Een legioen (divisie van de landmacht) bestond uit 10 cohortes plus stafdiensten. Een cohors omvatte drie manipels, elk van twee centuries, theoretisch ongeveer 480 manschappen plus centuriones en optiones. Het eerste cohort had dubbele sterkte (12 centuriae), waarschijnlijk omdat aan dit cohors de fabri (technische werklieden, zoals (wapen)smeden) en de administratieve staf (officiales) waren toegevoegd.
