In articulatory phonetics, a consonant is a speech sound that is articulated with complete or partial closure of the vocal tract. Examples are , pronounced with the lips; , pronounced with the front of the tongue; , pronounced with the back of the tongue; , pronounced in the throat; and , pronounced by forcing air through a narrow channel (fricatives); and and , which have air flowing through the nose (nasals). Contrasting with consonants are vowels.

Unter einem Konsonanten (v. lat. [litera/littera] consonans = mitlautender [Buchstabe], zu con = mit + sonare = tönen; auch Mitlaut, Mitlauter oder Mitstimmer) versteht man einen Laut, dessen Artikulation eine Verengung des Stimmtraktes beinhaltet, so dass der Atemluftstrom ganz oder teilweise blockiert wird und es zu hörbaren Turbulenzen (Luftwirbelungen) kommt. Konsonanten sind Hemmnis überwindende Laute. Hierzu zählen im Deutschen die Gruppe der Obstruenten (Plosive, Frikative, Affrikaten) und die Gruppe der Sonoranten (Liquide/Laterale, Nasale) sowie der Halbvokal oder Halbkonsonant .

Consonant heeft meerdere betekenissen:

• In de linguïstiek betekent het medeklinker.
• Het is een muzikale term voor welluidendheid is het tegenovergestelde van dissonant, zie consonantie.

Een medeklinker of consonant is een klank waarbij de lucht niet ongehinderd door de mond naar buiten kan, in tegenstelling tot de klinker. Bij de /p/ van aap verzamelt de lucht zich eerst voor de afgesloten lippen, en komt dan met een plofje naar buiten. Bij de /n/ van noot is de mondholte afgesloten en komt de lucht door de neus. Bij de /s/ van sap gaat de tong omhoog naar het verhemelte, waardoor de opening nauwer wordt en er een sisklank ontstaat.

On appelle consonne un type de son que l'on trouve dans les langues naturelles orales. Le mot « consonne » peut également renvoyer à une lettre de l'alphabet latin qui sert à noter un son consonne.
