contemplation

Contemplation means profound thinking about something. The word contemplation comes from the Latin word contemplatio. Its root is also that of the Latin word templum, a piece of ground consecrated for the taking of auspices, or a building for worship, derived either from Proto-Indo-European base *tem- "to cut", and so a "place reserved or cut out" or from the Proto-Indo-European base *temp- "to stretch", and thus referring to a cleared space in front of an altar. The Latin word contemplatio was used to translate the Greek word θεωρία (theoria). In a religious sense, contemplation is usually a type of prayer or meditation.

Kontemplation (lateinisch  „anschauen“, „betrachten“) bedeutet allgemein Beschaulichkeit oder auch beschauliche Betrachtung. Kontemplation ist auch als mystischer Weg der westlichen Tradition bekannt. In der Regel wird durch ein kontemplatives Leben oder Handeln ein besonderer Empfindungszustand oder eine Bewusstseinserweiterung angestrebt. Eine kontemplative Haltung ist von Ruhe und sanfter Aufmerksamkeit bestimmt. Somit ähnelt sie der buddhistischen Einsichtsmeditation Vipassana.

Contemplatie is een andere term voor beschouwing. De term stamt van het Latijnse contemplatio. Letterlijk betekent contemplatie "het scheiden van iets uit zijn omgeving". Contemplatio is de Latijnse vertaling van het Griekse 'theoreia'. Contemplatie is verwant aan meditatie.

La contemplation (theôria en grec est un déverbale de theôrô: je regarde, je contemple) est une application de l'esprit à voir et observer certaines réalités. Le terme a un sens particulier dans la religion et dans l'art. L'état contemplatif offrant dans le premier cas à l'âme une proximité avec Dieu et dans le second avec la nature.

Kontemplation är i kristen mystik en benämning på inre, utdragen och ordlös bön, varvid man tömmer medvetandet för att stilla betrakta det gudomliga, detta till skillnad från den mera aktiva meditationen (denna distinktion gäller i synnerhet i västlig kristen tradition).
