The cathode ray tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns, and a phosphorescent screen used to view images. It has a means to accelerate and deflect the electron beam(s) onto the screen to create the images. The images may represent electrical waveforms (oscilloscope), pictures (television, computer monitor), radar targets or others. CRTs have also been used as memory devices, in which case the visible light emitted from the fluorescent material (if any) is not intended to have significant meaning to a visual observer (though the visible pattern on the tube face may cryptically represent the stored data).

Die Kathodenstrahlröhre (engl. cathode ray tube, abgekürzt CRT, auch Braun'sche Röhre) ist eine Elektronenröhre, die einen gebündelten Elektronenstrahl erzeugt. Dieser kann mittels magnetischer oder elektrischer Felder abgelenkt bzw. moduliert werden, so dass ein sichtbares Bild erzeugt wird, wenn der Elektronenstrahl beim Auftreffen auf eine an der Innenseite der Röhre angebrachte Leuchtstoff-Schicht trifft.

Een kathodestraalbuis, ook CRT of beeldbuis geheten, is een elektronenbuis voorzien van een fluorescentiescherm dat oplicht als het getroffen wordt door de elektronenstraal en een afbuigmechanisme waarmee de elektronenstraal bestuurd kan worden zodat een afbeelding zichtbaar wordt. De naam 'beeldbuis' wordt vooral gebruikt om de kathodestraalbuis in een televisieapparaat aan te duiden. De naam 'CRT' is de afkorting van de Engelse naam 'Cathode Ray Tube'. De eerste kathodestraalbuizen werden gebruikt in de oscilloscoop. De bekendste toepassing van de kathodestraalbuis is die als televisiescherm. Een eenvoudiger vorm van een kathodestraalbuis is een indicatorbuis.

Un tube cathodique (en anglais, : CRT) est un tube à vide constitué d’un filament chauffé, d'électrodes en forme de lentilles trouées qui, soumises à une différence de potentiel (tension), créent un champ électrique accélérant les électrons. Ces derniers viennent frapper l’écran, sur lequel est déposée une couche électroluminescente réagissant au choc des électrons en créant un point lumineux. La trajectoire du flux d'électrons de la cathode vers l'écran est rendue possible par la présence d’une anode alimentée à un très fort potentiel (environ V) qui attire celui-ci.
