Cryptography or cryptology; from Greek  kryptós, "hidden, secret"; and graphein, "writing", or -logia, "study", respectively is the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of third parties called adversaries. These adversaries are often referred to as Eve in cryptography, while the sender and recipient of messages are called Alice and Bob respectively. More generally, cryptography is about constructing and analyzing protocols that prevent third parties or the public from reading private messages; various aspects in information security such as data confidentiality, data integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation are central to modern cryptography. Modern cryptography exists at the intersection of the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. Applications of cryptography include ATM cards, computer passwords, and electronic commerce.

Kryptographie bzw. Kryptografie (altgr.  kryptós ‚verborgen‘, ‚geheim‘ und gráphein ‚schreiben‘) ist ursprünglich die Wissenschaft der Verschlüsselung von Informationen. Heute befasst sie sich auch allgemein mit dem Thema Informationssicherheit, also der Konzeption, Definition und Konstruktion von Informationssystemen, die widerstandsfähig gegen Manipulation und unbefugtes Lesen sind. Die Kryptographie bildet zusammen mit der Kryptoanalyse (auch: Kryptanalyse) die Kryptologie.

Cryptografie of geheimschrift (uit het Grieks, κρυπτει kryptei "verborgen," en γράφω gráfo "schrijven") houdt zich bezig met technieken voor het verbergen of zodanig versleutelen van te verzenden informatie, dat het voor een cryptoanalist, een persoon die toegang heeft tot het kanaal tussen zender en ontvanger, en dus als het ware 'mee kan luisteren', onmogelijk is om tegen aanvaardbare inspanning uit de getransporteerde data af te leiden welke informatie er door de zender was verzonden en welke partijen daarbij betrokken waren. Cryptografie wordt gebruikt om gegevens over te dragen die niet leesbaar mogen zijn door andere partijen. Enkel de zender en ontvanger beschikken over de juiste sleutel om de gegevens terug om te zetten in hun originele vorm.

La cryptographie est une des disciplines de la cryptologie s'attachant à protéger des messages (assurant confidentialité, authenticité et intégrité) en s'aidant souvent de secrets ou clés. Elle se distingue de la stéganographie qui fait passer inaperçu un message dans un autre message alors que la cryptographie rend un message inintelligible à autre que qui-de-droit.
