catholique, les
péchés capitaux correspondent aux
péchés dont découlent tous les autres. Ainsi, le mot capital n'est pas en rapport avec la
gravité (par exemple, le meurtre n’y figure pas ; le blasphème non plus). Il vient du latin
caput (« tête »), par comparaison à cette partie du corps qui dirige l’ensemble : le péché capital conduit à d’autres péchés. Pour cette raison, la
Somme théologique de saint Thomas d’Aquin indique que l’appellation de «
vices » serait plus appropriée que celle de « péchés ».
