Defence mechanisms
A defence mechanism is a coping technique that reduces anxiety arising from unacceptable or potentially harmful impulses. Defence mechanisms are unconscious and are not to be confused with conscious coping strategies. Sigmund Freud was one of the first proponents of this construct.

Abwehrmechanismus
Abwehrmechanismus ist ein Begriff aus der Psychoanalyse. Mit ihm werden psychische Vorgänge bezeichnet, die den Zweck haben, miteinander in Konflikt stehende psychische Tendenzen (Triebe, Wünsche, Motive, Werte) mental so zu bewältigen bzw. zu kompensieren, dass die resultierende seelische Verfassung konfliktfreier ist. Dies erfolgt meist unbewusst.

Afweermechanisme
Een afweermechanisme in de psychologie is een 'techniek' of 'trucje' die de geest onwillekeurig gebruikt om bepaalde driftmatige strevingen en verlangens, en waarheden (realiteiten) die te veel angst of verdriet oproepen, uit het bewustzijn weg te houden.
