In mineralogy, diamond ( or ; from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας – adámas "unbreakable") is a metastable allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is less stable than graphite, but the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at standard conditions. Diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Those properties determine the major industrial application of diamond in cutting and polishing tools and the scientific applications in diamond knives and diamond anvil cells.

Diamant ist die kubische Modifikation des Kohlenstoffs und als natürlich vorkommender Feststoff ein Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der Elemente. Diamant bildet meist oktaederförmige Kristalle, oft mit gebogenen und streifigen Flächen. Weitere beobachtete Formen sind das Tetraeder, Dodekaeder und der Würfel. Die Kristalle sind transparent, farblos oder durch Verunreinigungen (z. B. Stickstoff) oder Kristallgitterdefekte grün, gelb, braun und seltener auch orange, blau, rosa, rot oder grau bis schwarz gefärbt.

Diamant ist die Bezeichnung einer Familie französischer Trägerraketen, mit deren Hilfe zwischen 1965 und 1975 eine Reihe kleiner Satelliten gestartet wurde. Diese Rakete wurde in verschiedenen Versionen gebaut.

Diamant (Oudgrieks: ἀδάμας of adamas, "onverslaanbaar") is een allotrope verschijningsvorm van koolstof die als delfstof aangetroffen wordt, maar ook in laboratoria gemaakt kan worden. In diamant hebben de koolstof-koolstofbindingen een viervlakstructuur waardoor de atomen in drie dimensies gebonden zijn; dit verklaart deels de hardheid waar het mineraal zijn naam aan dankt. Daarentegen heeft grafiet, de koolstofvorm die op aarde het meest voorkomt, een vlakke kristalstructuur waardoor het veel zachter is en schilferende laagjes vormt. Diamant is voor zover bekend het hardste materiaal dat in de natuur voorkomt en is dan ook het ijkpunt voor hardheid 10 op de hardheidsschaal van Mohs. Enkel een aantal industrieel vervaardigde materialen, ook opgebouwd uit zuivere koolstof, zijn harder.

Le diamant est un minéral composé de carbone (tout comme le graphite et la lonsdaléite), dont il représente l'allotrope de haute pression, qui cristallise dans le système cristallin cubique. C'est le matériau naturel le plus dur (dureté de 10 (maximum) selon l'échelle de Mohs).

La fusée Diamant est un lanceur de satellites de construction française dont le premier tir a eu lieu en 1965 permettant l'envoi du premier satellite français Astérix A1  sur une orbite basse . Diamant est le premier lanceur construit au-dehors des États-Unis et de l'URSS. Le programme spatial français des « Pierres Précieuses » qui a abouti à Diamant a été lancé fin 1961 et le dernier lancement de la fusée a eu lieu en 1975. Douze fusées Diamant ont été lancées en tout (3 échecs).

Le Diamond Light Source, situé dans l'Oxfordshire au Royaume-Uni, est un synchrotron opérationnel depuis janvier 2007, mais officiellement inauguré le 19 octobre 2007 par la reine Élisabeth II.
