discus

DISCUS, or distributed source coding using syndromes, is a method for distributed source coding. It is a compression algorithm used to compress correlated data sources. The method is designed to achieve the Slepian–Wolf bound by using channel codes.

The discus throw is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than his or her competitors. It is an ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-B.C. Myron statue, Discobolus. Although not part of the modern pentathlon, it was one of the events of the ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least to 708 BC.

Der Diskuswurf (auch Diskuswerfen) ist eine olympische Disziplin der Leichtathletik, bei der eine linsenförmige Scheibe möglichst weit zu werfen ist.

Het discuswerpen is een atletiekdiscipline, waarbij een lensvormige discus weggeslingerd wordt. De mannen werpen een discus met een massa van 2 kg en 220 mm doorsnede, terwijl bij de vrouwen de discus 1 kg weegt bij een doorsnede van 181 mm. Bij junioren en masters wordt met andere gewichten geworpen.
