Disc (britisches Englisch, gleiche Bedeutung) haben die gleiche Bedeutung, werden aber in unterschiedlichen Kontexten angewandt.

Als Ursache für diese Unterscheidung der Schreibweisen wird angenommen, dass die Entwicklung optischer Datenträger primär im europäischen und asiatischen Raum erfolgte, wo traditionell das britische Englisch bevorzugt wird. Heutzutage werden die Wortendungen immer noch primär für die verschiedenen Speichertechniken benutzt, obwohl sie synonym verwendet werden dürfen.
