A doctorate (from Latin docere, "to teach") or doctor's degree (from Latin doctor, "teacher") or doctoral degree is an academic degree awarded by universities that, in most countries, qualifies the holder to teach at the university level in the degree's field, or to work in a specific profession. There are a variety of doctoral degrees, with the most common being the PhD, which is awarded in many different fields, ranging from the humanities to the scientific disciplines. There are also other types of doctorates, such as the Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). In some countries, the highest degree in a given field is called a terminal degree. Many universities also award "honorary doctorates" to individuals who have been deemed worthy of special recognition, either for scholarly work or for other contributions to the university or to society.

Der Doktor (weibl. Doktorin;  lateinisch doctor, weibl. doctrix; zu lat. docere ‚lehren‘, doctus ‚gelehrt‘) ist der höchste akademische Grad. Die Abkürzung ist Dr., im Plural Dres. (lat. doctores). Der Plural gilt jedoch allein für mehrere Personen mit Doktorgrad und nicht – wie vielfach fälschlich auch von höchsten akademischen Würdenträgern angegeben – auf mehrere Doktorgrade einer Person. Die Bezeichnung "Dres. h.c." für eine einzelne Person ist daher grammatisch und sachlich unrichtig. Der akademische Doktorgrad (das Doktorat) wird durch die Promotion an einer Hochschule mit Promotionsrecht erlangt. Durch die Promotion wird dem Kandidaten die Fähigkeit zum selbstständigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten bescheinigt. Eine abgeschlossene Promotion ist in der Regel Voraussetzung für eine Habilitation.

Het doctoraat is de hoogste graad die aan een universiteit behaald kan worden. De bijbehorende titel is doctor of dr. Het behalen van een doctoraat heet promotie, en de persoon die dat doet heet (in Nederland) promovendus of (in België) doctorandus. De benaming is afgeleid van het Latijnse gerundivum dat "hij die moet promoveren/doctoreren" betekent.

Selon les pays et les époques, le doctorat peut être un grade d'État (cas en Russie, en France à partir de l'époque napoléonienne jusqu'en 1897) ou un grade d'établissement (cas en Amérique du Nord, au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, en France avant la Révolution ou après 1984), voire mixte (cas en France de 1897 à 1984 avec la réintroduction progressive du doctorat d'établissement et l'élimination progressive du doctorat d'État), et peut être régi de manière globale, ou par discipline. En France on effectue ses recherches dans une formation de minimum 3 ans qui est une école doctorale et c'est celle-ci qui délivre le doctorat et pas seulement l'établissement d'inscription administrative.

La durée d'obtention d'un doctorat en recherche varie considérablement : en Amérique du Nord les candidats y consacrent en moyenne sept ans après l'obtention de la maîtrise, en comparaison avec trois à quatre ans au Royaume-Uni.

Il dottorato di ricerca è un titolo accademico dell'istruzione superiore in molti paesi del mondo, corrispondente al massimo grado di istruzione universitaria ottenibile. Nei paesi anglofoni è denominato Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. o PhD, abbreviazione del latino "Philosophiæ Doctor").
