Doctor, as a title, originates from the Latin word of the same spelling and meaning. The word is originally an agentive noun of the Latin verb docere 'to teach'. It has been used as an honored academic title for over a millennium in Europe, where it dates back to the rise of the first universities. This use spread to the Americas, through its former European colonies, and is now prevalent in most of the world. Contracted "Dr" or "Dr.", it is used as a designation for a person who has obtained a Research Doctorate (i.e. Ph.D., Ed.D). In contrast, a degree such as M.D. and D.O. is a vocational degree, and thus not considered a doctorate.

Der Doktor (weibl. Doktorin;  lateinisch doctor, weibl. doctrix; zu lat. docere ‚lehren‘, doctus ‚gelehrt‘) ist der höchste akademische Grad. Die Abkürzung ist Dr., im Plural Dres. (lat. doctores). Der Plural gilt jedoch allein für mehrere Personen mit Doktorgrad und nicht – wie vielfach fälschlich auch von höchsten akademischen Würdenträgern angegeben – auf mehrere Doktorgrade einer Person. Die Bezeichnung "Dres. h.c." für eine einzelne Person ist daher grammatisch und sachlich unrichtig. Der akademische Doktorgrad (das Doktorat) wird durch die Promotion an einer Hochschule mit Promotionsrecht erlangt. Durch die Promotion wird dem Kandidaten die Fähigkeit zum selbstständigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten bescheinigt. Eine abgeschlossene Promotion ist in der Regel Voraussetzung für eine Habilitation.

El doctorado es un grado académico universitario. En el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior y en la mayoría de los países occidentales, requiere la superación previa del grado de Maestría. El Doctorado es el último y preeminente grado académico que confiere una universidad u otra institución autorizada para ello.

Doctor (afkorting: dr.) is in de meeste landen de hoogste academische graad of titel die een persoon kan verwerven aan een universiteit. Het behalen van deze graad wordt aangeduid als een (wetenschappelijke) promotie en vindt plaats op basis van wetenschappelijke kwalificaties, waarvan het publiceren van een proefschrift doorgaans het belangrijkst is. Een eredoctoraat is hierop een opvallende uitzondering. Dit wordt verleend aan personen die een uitzonderlijke prestatie hebben geleverd op wetenschappelijk of maatschappelijk gebied, zonder publicatie van een proefschrift. De doctorstitel is in Nederland wettelijk beschermd, en het ten onrechte voeren van deze titel is verboden.
