ecoregion

An ecoregion (ecological region) is an ecologically and geographically defined area that is smaller than a bioregion, which in turn is smaller than an ecozone. All three of these are either less or greater than an ecosystem. Ecoregions cover relatively large areas of land or water, and contain characteristic, geographically distinct assemblages of natural communities and species. The biodiversity of flora, fauna and ecosystems that characterise an ecoregion tends to be distinct from that of other ecoregions. In theory, biodiversity or conservation ecoregions are relatively large areas of land or water where the probability of encountering different species and communities at any given point remain relatively constant, within an acceptable range of variation (largely undefined at this point).

Ökoregion ist ein ursprünglich geowissenschaftlich geprägter Begriff zur Einteilung der Erde nach Großräumen unter verschiedenen geo- oder bioökologischen Gesichtspunkten. In diesem Sinne wurde sie definiert als ein „wiederkehrendes Muster von Ökosystemen, die mit charakteristischen Kombinationen von Boden und Geländeformen verbunden sind und eine Region charakterisieren.“

Une écorégion ou région écologique est une zone géographique assez large se distinguant par le caractère unique de sa géomorphologie, de sa géologie, de son climat, de ses sols, de ses ressources en eau, de sa faune et de sa flore. Plusieurs organismes internationaux ont établi des listes d'écorégions, le World Wildlife Fund, la Commission de coopération environnementale d'Amérique du Nord, la DMEEReuropéenne, la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration américaine. Les zones désignées par chacun de ces organismes ne doivent pas être confondues car ils n'utilisent pas le même critère de désignation.
