A candidate who has been elected to an office but who has not yet been installed or officially taken office may be referred to as an officer-elect, with the title of the position being used instead of "officer" (e.g. president-elect). These may include an incoming president, senator, representative, governor, mayor, and even Pope.

An election is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations.

Eine Wahl im Sinne der Politikwissenschaft ist ein Verfahren in Staaten, Gebietskörperschaften und Organisationen zur Bestellung einer repräsentativen Person oder mehrerer Personen als entscheidungs- oder herrschaftsausübendes Organ. Aus Wahlen können Abgeordnete (z. B. bei Landtags- und Bundestagswahlen), Kreis-, Stadt-, Gemeinderäte (bei Kommunalwahlen), Präsidenten und Regierungschefs, Vorstände, Aufsichtsräte, Betriebsräte u. ä. hervorgehen. Diese Amts- oder Mandatsinhaber erhalten ihre Legitimation dadurch, dass eine Personengruppe in einem vorher festgelegten Verfahren ihren Willen äußert. Die Summe der Einzelentscheidungen führt zu der im Wahlergebnis abgebildeten Gesamtentscheidung.

Een verkiezing is een methode waarbij een aantal personen, de kiesgerechtigden, door middel van een stemming bepaalt aan wie een bepaalde functie, post of titel moet worden toegekend.

L'élection est la désignation, par le vote d'électeurs, de représentants (une personne, un groupe, un parti ou une option) destinés à les représenter ou occuper une fonction en leur nom.
