Emotion, in everyday speech, is any relatively brief conscious experience characterized by intense mental activity and a high degree of pleasure or displeasure. Scientific discourse has drifted to other meanings and there is no consensus on a definition. Emotion is often intertwined with mood, temperament, personality, disposition, and motivation. In some theories, cognition is an important aspect of emotion. Those acting primarily on emotion may seem as if they are not thinking, but mental processes are still essential, particularly in the interpretation of events. For example, the realization of danger and subsequent arousal of the nervous system (e.g. rapid heartbeat and breathing, sweating, muscle tension) is integral to the experience of fear. Other theories, however, claim that emotion is separate from and can precede cognition.

Emotion bezeichnet eine Gemütsbewegung im Sinne eines Affektes. Der Affekt ist eine besondere Qualität des Fühlens, der damit dem Leib-Seele-Problem Ausdruck verleiht. Sie ist ein psychophysiologisches, auch psychisches Phänomen, das durch die bewusste oder unbewusste Wahrnehmung eines Ereignisses oder einer Situation ausgelöst wird. Das Wahrnehmen geht einher mit physiologischen Veränderungen, spezifischen Kognitionen, subjektivem Gefühlserleben und reaktivem Sozialverhalten.

Een emotie wordt vaak omgeschreven als een innerlijke beleving of gevoel van bijvoorbeeld vreugde, angst, boosheid, verdriet dat door een bepaalde situatie wordt opgeroepen of spontaan kan optreden. Emoties gaan echter niet alleen met subjectieve gevoelens, maar ook met lichamelijke reacties en bepaalde expressies in het gedrag gepaard. In biologische zin kan men een emotie ook definiëren als een reactie van onze hersenen op een affectieve prikkel. Dit komt zowel bij mensen als dieren vrijwel automatisch tot uiting in een bepaald patroon van gedrag (bijvoorbeeld vluchten of toenadering) en fysiologische reacties. Het gevoel kan dan gezien worden als een speciale uiting of vorm van emoties die typisch is voor mensen, namelijk de bewuste beleving, of mentale reflectie van een emotie.

L'émotion (du latin motio « action de mouvoir, mouvement ») est une expérience psychophysiologique complexe de l'état d'esprit d'un individu lorsqu'il réagit aux influences biochimiques (interne) et environnementales (externe). Chez les humains, l'émotion inclut fondamentalement "un comportement physiologique, des comportements expressifs et une conscience". L'émotion est associée à l'humeur, au tempérament, à la personnalité et à la disposition et à la motivation. Le mot "émotion" provient du mot français "émouvoir". Il est basé sur le latin emovere, dont e- (variante de ex-) signifie "hors de" et movere signifie "mouvement". Le terme lié "motivation" est également dérivé du mot movere.

Emocja (od łac. e movere, w ruchu) – stan znacznego poruszenia umysłu. Słowo to miało w historii wiele znaczeń przed-psychologicznych, i odnosiło się nie do stanu indywidualnego umysłu, ale najpierw do przemieszczania się (ludów, populacji), potem do prawie fizycznej agitacji (np. w przypadku burzy, an Emotion in the air, 1708). We współczesnym znaczeniu tego słowa, emocja implikuje aspekt działaniowy, reakcyjny, i nie jest równoznaczna z pasywnym uczuciem (ang., fr. passion, gr. πάσχω, zob. namiętność). Takie rozumienie emocji zwiazane jest z pracami Williama Jamesa (1890), Roberta Solomona i Antonio Damasio (1995).
