Nobility is a social class, normally ranked immediately under royalty, that possesses more acknowledged privileges or than most other classes in a society, membership thereof typically being hereditary. The privileges associated with nobility may constitute substantial advantages over or relative to non-nobles, or may be largely honorary (e.g., precedence), and vary from country to country and era to era. Historically, membership of the nobility and the prerogatives thereof have been regulated or acknowledged by the monarch or government, thereby distinguishing it from other sectors of a nation's upper class. Nonetheless, nobility per se has rarely constituted a closed caste; acquisition of sufficient power, wealth, military prowess or royal favour has, occasionally or often, enabled commoners to ascend into the nobility.

Unter Nobilitierung (auch Adelung, Nobilitation oder Standeserhebung genannt) versteht man die Erhebung in den Adelsstand. Sie ist nur in Staaten mit monarchischer Staatsform möglich und kann nur von einem souveränen Monarchen ausgehen; unter dem Nobilitierungsrecht versteht man das Recht, das ein Monarch (meist der König oder Kaiser) hat, um eine Person in den Adelsstand zu erheben.

L’anoblissement est un acte formel de promotion d'une personne par la volonté d'un souverain, provoquant un changement d'état social en lui conférant la noblesse. C'est l'une des formes de reconnaissance qu'un État peut utiliser pour honorer l'un de ses citoyens.

Nobilitacja (z łac.), poza popularnym znaczeniem słownikowym – uszlachcenie, czyli przejście do stanu szlacheckiego osoby (szlachectwo osobiste) lub osoby i jej rodziny (szlachectwo dziedziczne), niemających dotąd tytułu szlacheckiego. Nobilitacji dokonywała osoba panująca, panujący nadawał także danej rodzinie herb. Często uszlachceniu towarzyszyła też adopcja do istniejącego rodu heraldycznego.

Aatelointi, naturalisointi ja adoptio olivat tapoja, joilla Suomen suuriruhtinaskunnassa ja Ruotsin kuningaskunnassa saattoi saada aatelisarvon. Aateloinnin saattoi suorittaa vain hallitsija, kuningas tai suuriruhtinas. Aateloinnin merkkinä aateloitu sai aateliskirjeen. Useimmiten aatelisarvo kuitenkin perittiin.
