Estimation (or estimating) is the process of finding an estimate, or approximation, which is a value that is usable for some purpose even if input data may be incomplete, uncertain, or unstable. The value is nonetheless usable because it is derived from the best information available. Typically, estimation involves "using the value of a statistic derived from a sample to estimate the value of a corresponding population parameter". The sample provides information that can be projected, through various formal or informal processes, to determine a range most likely to describe the missing information. An estimate that turns out to be incorrect will be an overestimate if the estimate exceeded the actual result, and an underestimate if the estimate fell short of the actual result.

Unter Schätzung versteht man die genäherte Bestimmung von Zahlenwerten, Größen oder Parametern durch Augenschein, Erfahrung oder statistisch-mathematische Methoden. Das Ergebnis einer Schätzung weicht im Regelfall vom wahren Wert ab. Der wahre Wert lässt sich eigentlich nur bei zählbaren Größen feststellen. Dagegen ist jede Messung – in welchem Genauigkeitsbereich auch immer – mit unvermeidlichen kleinen Fehlern behaftet, sodass man nie wahre Werte erhält, sondern nur wahrscheinlich(st)e Werte.

Een categorie van methoden die de statistiek hanteert om informatie te verkrijgen, wordt gevormd door de schattingsmethoden. Een onbekende parameter van een populatie (of verdeling) wordt geschat door een uit de steekproef berekende grootheid, de schatting. Het voorschrift dat bepaalt hoe de schatting uit de steekproef moet worden berekend, wordt schatter genoemd.

Odhad je vypocítané nebo jen ze zkušenosti predpovezené více ci méne približné urcení výsledku nebo informace, která je využitelné, i když jsou vstupní data nekompletní, nejistá, nebo zašumelá.
