Een event in een computerprogramma is een gebeurtenis waarop dit programma kan reageren. Het is het besturingssysteem dat aan het programma meldt wat er gebeurd is. Zo kan een programma vragen "Druk op OK om verder te gaan". Er gebeurt dan niets tot het besturingssysteem aan het programma meldt dat op OK geklikt werd.

Event est un mot anglais qui signifie événement. Utilisé, en français dans le domaine de l'art, il prend un sens particulier et précis.

En biologie, l'évent correspond à la narine simple ou double des cétacés. Il s'agit de l'orifice situé sur la tête de l'animal, et qui lui permet d'expulser l'air expiré. C'est l'organe homologue des narines de tous les mammifères. La position des évents au sommet du crâne permet à ces animaux de ne pas sortir complètement la tête de l'eau pour respirer, les premières vertèbres de ce fait peuvent être rigide sans pénaliser ces animaux, qui, sans quoi, devraient redresser la tête comme les phoques.

Event (ang. wydarzenie) – zdarzenie zaplanowane i zorganizowane pod kątem ściśle określonego celu. Ten cel determinuje rodzaj wydarzenia, uczestników, miejsce, czas i niezbędne środki. W języku potocznym, używane w odniesieniu do wydarzenia związanego z muzyką elektroniczną (np. festiwalem) lub z grami MMORPG (oznacza specjalne wydarzenie w grze). Określenie to zostało zaczerpnięte z zachodniej kultury pod koniec 2004 roku. Uwaga! – w języku angielskim słowo event wymawiane jest (według przybliżonej polskiej transkrypcji) najczęściej [ewent] bądź [ywent] (znacznie rzadziej [iwent]), z akcentem na drugą sylabę, nie zaś – jak to się przyjęło w Polsce, prawdopodobnie z inspiracji sztuki teatralnej i filmu "Testosteron" – [iwent], z akcentem na pierwszą sylabę.
