An experiment is a procedure carried out to verify, refute, or validate a hypothesis. Experiments provide insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. Experiments vary greatly in goal and scale, but always rely on repeatable procedure and logical analysis of the results. There also exist  natural experimental studies.

Ein Experiment (von lateinisch experimentum „Versuch, Beweis, Prüfung, Probe“) im Sinne der Wissenschaft ist eine methodisch angelegte Untersuchung zur empirischen Gewinnung von Information (Daten). Experimente werden in vielen Wissenschaften benötigt und durchgeführt, beispielsweise in Naturwissenschaften, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Medizin, Psychologie und Soziologie. Meist sind Zählungen oder Messungen ein wichtiger Teil des Experiments.

Een experiment of proef is een zorgvuldig opgezette en nauwkeurige observatie van een stukje werkelijkheid dat kan worden uitgevoerd om een wetenschappelijke hypothese te testen. Volgens Popper zou dit met een cruciale test moeten. Volgens de Duhem-Quinestelling is dit niet mogelijk.

Les méthodes expérimentales scientifiques consistent à tester par des expériences répétées la validité d'une hypothèse. L'obtention de données nouvelles, qualitatives ou quantitatives, confirme ou infirme l'hypothèse initiale. L'expérience scientifique se distingue d'autres expériences en ce qu'elle requiert, pour être crédible, l'application d'un protocole d'expérimentation permettant de reproduire précisément une expérience particulière. Certains soutiennent que le savant Ibn Al Haytham (Alhazen) a été l'un des premiers à faire la promotion des méthodes expérimentales.
