In biology and ecology, extinction is the end of an organism or of a group of organisms (taxon), normally a species. The moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of the species, although the capacity to breed and recover may have been lost before this point. Because a species' potential range may be very large, determining this moment is difficult, and is usually done retrospectively. This difficulty leads to phenomena such as Lazarus taxa, where a species presumed extinct abruptly "reappears" (typically in the fossil record) after a period of apparent absence.

Aussterben (biologischer und paläontologischer Fachbegriff: Extinktion) bezeichnet das Ende evolutionärer Stammlinien durch den Tod aller Nachkommen. Für Theorien und Modellbildung ist meist die angemessene Betrachtungsebene die der Population. Eine Population ist ausgestorben, wenn alle ihre Mitglieder tot sind, d.h. die Populationsgröße auf Null gefallen ist. Existieren weitere Populationen derselben Art an anderen Orten, handelt es sich um ein lokales Aussterben. Eine biologische Art stirbt aus, wenn das letzte Individuum der Art stirbt.

Als het moment van uitsterven wordt algemeen de dood van het laatste individu van de groep of soort beschouwd. Uitsterven is een normaal natuurlijk verschijnsel. Door evolutie en soortvorming ontstaan nieuwe soorten, bijvoorbeeld wanneer ze in de mogelijkheid zijn om een ecologische niche te vinden en te exploiteren. Soorten sterven uit omdat de factoren die de populatie klein houden, zoals ziekten of predators, toenemen, omdat hun leefomgeving door bijvoorbeeld klimaatsverandering drastisch verandert, of doordat de concurrentie toeneemt.
