Extortion (also called shakedown, outwrestling, and exaction) is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, individual or institution, through coercion. It is sometimes euphemistically referred to as a "protection racket" since the racketeers often phrase their demands as payment for "protection" from (real or hypothetical) threats from unspecified other parties. Extortion is commonly practiced by organized crime groups. The actual obtainment of money or property is not required to commit the offense. Making a threat of violence which refers to a requirement of a payment of money or property to halt future violence is sufficient to commit the offense. Exaction refers not only to extortion or the demanding and obtaining of something through force, but additionally, in its formal definition, means the infliction of something such as pain and suffering or making somebody endure something unpleasant.

Bei der Erpressung versucht jemand, sich selbst oder Dritte rechtswidrig durch Gewalt oder durch Androhung eines empfindlichen Übels zu Lasten eines anderen zu bereichern. Insofern ist die Erpressung von der Nötigung zu unterscheiden, die keine Bereicherungsabsicht oder Vermögensschädigung voraussetzt. Als rechtswidrig gilt die Tat, wenn die Zweck-Mittel-Relation zwischen der Nötigungshandlung, also der Gewalt oder der Drohung und dem angestrebten Nötigungszweck als verwerflich anzusehen ist.

Afpersing is een bijzondere vorm van diefstal met geweld en/of bedreigingen. Het onderscheid bestaat erin dat de dader van dit misdrijf de goederen niet wegneemt maar doet afgeven, als gevolg van geweld of bedreiging.

L'extorsion est l'action d'obtenir de force de quelqu'un quelque chose. On utilise couramment le terme de racket qui renvoie à la même infraction.

Wymuszenie rozbójnicze to występek polegający na doprowadzeniu innej osoby do rozporządzenia mieniem własnym lub cudzym albo do zaprzestania działalności gospodarczej poprzez zastosowanie wobec niej przemocy, groźby zamachu na życie, zdrowie lub groźby gwałtownego zamachu na mienie. Sprawca musi działać w celu osiągnięcia korzyści majątkowej dla siebie lub dla kogoś innego.
