A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. According to one set of controversial theories, these movements convey the emotional state of an individual to observers. Facial expressions are a form of nonverbal communication. They are a primary means of conveying social information between humans, but they also occur in most other mammals and some other animal species. Als die Mimik (auch die „Miene“ oder das „Mienenspiel“) werden die sichtbaren Bewegungen der Gesichts­oberfläche bezeichnet. In den meisten Fällen entsteht ein Gesamteindruck aus einzelnen mimischen Facetten, da die einzelnen Bewegungen der Gesichtsmuskulatur in Sekundenbruchteilen ablaufen. Die Mimik kann zusammen mit anderen Verhaltensweisen und Handlungen, wie der Gestik, ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Nonverbalen Kommunikation sein.

Mimika – ruchy mięśni twarzy, wyrażające myśli, emocje, przeżycia, nastroje, a także postawy wobec innych ludzi oraz bieżące komentarze do toczącej się komunikacji (szerzej zobacz: komunikacja niewerbalna). W teatrze towarzyszy wypowiadanym słowom jako środek gry aktorskiej. W pantomimie jest najważniejszym obok ruchu środkiem wyrazu.
