A barn is an agricultural building primarily located on farms and used for various purposes. In the North American area, a barn refers to structures that house livestock, including cattle and horses, as well as equipment and fodder, and often grain. As a result, the term barn is often qualified e.g. tobacco barn, dairy barn, sheep barn, potato barn. In the British Isles and Continental Europe, the term barn is restricted mainly to storage structures for unthreshed cereals and fodder, the terms byre or shippon being applied to cow shelters, whereas horses are kept in buildings known as stables. On the Continent, however, barns were often part of integrated structures known as byre-dwellings (or housebarns in US literature). In addition, barns may be used for equipment storage, as a covered workplace, and for activities such as threshing.

Unter einem Bauernhof versteht man einen landwirtschaftlichen Familienbetrieb, in dem die Mitglieder der Besitzerfamilie überwiegend praktische Tätigkeiten ausführen, oder auch die Hofstelle mit Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäuden dieses Betriebes.

Als Scheune (oberdeutsch auch Scheuer, Stadel, Schupfen, schweizerdeutsch Schüür, Schopf, Gade) werden genutzte Speicher-Gebäude bezeichnet. Sie dient ebenso als Lagerraum für die vielfältigen Betriebsmittel (z. B. den landtechnischen Gerätschaften) und als überdachter Arbeits- und Werkraum für vor-, sowie nachgelagerte Be- und Verarbeitungsschritte im landwirtschaftliche Produktionsprozess (Warenaufbereitung, Fahrzeugreparatur und -wartung).

Een boerderij of hoeve of hofstede is de woning annex bedrijfsruimte van een agrarisch bedrijf. Vaak wordt met een boerderij ook het complete bedrijf van een boer bedoeld, inclusief woonhuis, erf, weiland, bouwland, stallen en schuren.

Een schuur is een vrijstaand gebouw, dat gebruikt wordt om goederen of voedsel in op te slaan, en ook als werkruimte kan dienen, maar niet als woning bedoeld is.

Une ferme est, au sens propre, une exploitation agricole exploitée sous le régime d'une location de longue durée avec un loyer annuel fixe, ou fermage. Il s'agit d'un contrat de louage entre le propriétaire et le fermier qui porte sur un domaine comportant selon les cas des terres, des forêts, des étendues d'eau, des bâtiments d'exploitation et d'habitation, parfois avec le cheptel et le matériel d'exploitation, des droits de marque et d'appellation d'origine, des servitudes, etc.

Un hangar agricole est un bâtiment agricole utilisé pour le stockage (lorsqu'il s'agit des récoltes, on utilisait auparavant le terme de dont la superficie était calculée en fonction du cubage de ces récoltes) et permettant le travail dans un lieu couvert. Ayant un toit en tôle, tuile ou ardoise, ses principales ouvertures sont des portes à un ou deux panneaux. Il est parfois utilisé pour abriter les animaux ou stocker des véhicules et autres équipements agricoles. Les hangars agricoles sont construits généralement loin des fermes pour éviter la propagation d'incendie.
