Fern (also Stichting Fern is a Dutch foundation created in 1995. It is an international non-governmental organization to keep track of the EU's involvement in forests and to coordinate NGO activities at the European level. Through its work, Fern aims to increase the political and economic opportunities for people to create a more balanced society in which human rights are fully respected and environmental and social values are fully integrated.

A fern is a member of a group of approximately 12,000 species of vascular plants that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. They differ from mosses by being vascular (i.e. having water-conducting vessels). They have stems and leaves, like other vascular plants. Most ferns have what are called fiddleheads that expand into fronds, which are each delicately divided.

Die Farne sind eine Gruppe von Gefäßsporenpflanzen, die die Schwestergruppe der Samenpflanzen bilden. Die Farne umfassen alle Gefäßsporenpflanzen außer den Bärlapppflanzen: die Schachtelhalme, Gabelblattgewächse, Natternzungen, Echte Farne und Marattiaceae. Sie werden häufig als Monilophyten bezeichnet, die Bezeichnungen Monilophyta oder Moniloformopses sind jedoch keine gültigen Taxon-Bezeichnungen.

Die Farne-Inseln (englisch: Farne Islands, kurz The Farnes) sind eine unbewohnte Inselgruppe an der Küste Northumberlands im Nordosten Englands.

Forests and the European Union Resource Network (FERN) ist eine europäische Umweltorganisation mit Sitz in Brüssel, die sich im Bereich der Forstpolitik der Europäischen Union betätigt. Sie wurde im Jahre 1995 vom World Rainforest Movement gegründet und koordiniert eine Reihe europäischer Netzwerke von Nichtregierungsorganisationen. FERN versteht sich als Mittler zwischen NGOs und der EU. Die Organisation beobachtet die europäische und internationale Forst- und Waldpolitik und informiert andere Organisationen und interessiere Privatpersonen über wichtige Entwicklungen auf EU-Ebene. Die Organisation ist auch für die Publikation einiger Studien zu forstpolitischen Fragestellungen bekannt, derer sich andere NGOs bedienen, z. B. zu Fragen forstlicher Zertifizierung.

Merritt Lyndon Fernald ( 5 de octubre de 1873 - 22 de septiembre de 1950 ) fue un botánico, pteridólogo y profesor estadounidense. En su tiempo fue reconocido como respetado estudioso de la taxonomía y de la fitogeografía de la flora de las Tracheobionta (plantas vasculares, del este templado de Norteamérica. Publicó más de 850 ítems científicos, y escribió y editó la 8ª edición del Manual Gray de Botánica; y Plantas Comestibles Silvestres del Este de EE.UU. entre 1919-1920 con Alfred Kinsey, publicado en 1943.

De varens zijn een groep van vaatplanten, naargelang de classificatie behorend tot de Pteropsida of tot de Monilophyta. Naast de 'echte' varens worden onder deze naam ook de varenachtigen (Engels: fern allies) verstaan - waaronder de paardenstaarten, de Psilotopsida met de addertongfamilie, en de Marattiopsida, maar zonder de Lycophyta (wolfsklauwen en biesvarens), die een zustergroep zijn van de varens.

Les fougères ou Filicophytes (Filicophyta) forment une sous-division de cryptogames vasculaires. Elles comportent environ (le plus grand embranchement végétal après les angiospermes). On rencontre environ les trois quarts des espèces dans les régions tropicales et une bonne proportion de ces fougères tropicales est épiphyte.
