Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum and natural gas. Other more commonly used derivatives of fossil fuels include kerosene and propane. They range from volatile materials with low carbon:hydrogen ratios like methane, to liquid petroleum to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal. Methane can be found in hydrocarbon fields, alone, associated with oil, or in the form of methane clathrates. The theory that fossil fuels formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over millions of years (see biogenic theory) was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.

Fossile Energie wird aus Brennstoffen gewonnen, die in geologischer Vorzeit aus Abbauprodukten von toten Pflanzen und Tieren entstanden sind. Dazu gehören Braunkohle, Steinkohle, Torf, Erdgas und Erdöl. Man nennt diese Energiequellen fossile Energiequellen oder fossile Brennstoffe (zur Bezeichnung siehe Fossil). Dagegen wird Biomasse aus Holz und weiteren neuzeitlichen organischen Abfällen und Überresten gewonnen.

Fossiele brandstoffen zijn koolwaterstofverbindingen die zijn ontstaan uit resten van plantaardig en dierlijk leven in het geologisch verleden van de aarde, vooral in het Carboon maar ook uit andere tijdperken. Hieronder vallen aardolie, aardgas, steenkool en bruinkool. Ook turf gewonnen uit hoogveen en laagveen zijn producten in deze reeks, die echter nog niet aan de extremen van druk en temperatuur diep in de aardkorst hebben blootgestaan, die tot de vorming van kolen, olie en gas hebben geleid.

On appelle combustible fossile tous les combustibles riches en carbone — essentiellement des hydrocarbures — issus de la méthanisation d'êtres vivants morts et enfouis dans le sol depuis plusieurs millions d’années, jusqu’à parfois d’années. Il s’agit du pétrole, du charbon, de la tourbe et du gaz naturel. Parmi ces derniers, le méthane  présente le rapport H/C le plus élevé, tandis que l’anthracite et certaines houilles sont composés de carbone presque pur. Ces sources d'énergie ne sont pas renouvelables car elles demandent des millions d'années pour se constituer et parce qu'elles sont utilisées beaucoup plus vite que le temps nécessaire pour recréer des réserves.
