The French are a nation and ethnic group who are identified with the country of France. This connection may be legal, historical, or cultural. Descending from peoples of Celtic (Gauls) origin, later mixing with Romance (Romans) and Germanic (Franks) origin, and having experienced a high rate of inward migration since the middle of the 19th century, modern French society can be considered a melting pot. France was still a patchwork of local customs and regional differences in the late 19th century, and besides the common speaking of the French language, the definition of some unified French culture is a complex issue. Some French have equated their nationality with citizenship, regardless of ethnicity or country of residence.

Die Franzosen sind eine romanischsprachige Nation in Westeuropa. Im Selbstverständnis der Französischen Republik ist die Nation keine ethnische Gruppe, die französische Verfassung lehnt den Gedanken an eine über die Staatsbürgerschaft hinausgehende ethnische Zuordnung ab. Dem stehen nationalistische beziehungsweise rassistische Auffassungen entgegen, die französischen Staatsbürgern, die aus Gebieten außerhalb des europäischen Frankreich stammen, aufgrund ihrer Hautfarbe, Religion oder ethnischen Herkunft die Zugehörigkeit zum Staatsvolk absprechen.

Onder Fransen (mannelijk enkelvoud: Fransman, vrouwelijk enkelvoud: Française) worden de volgende mensen verstaan:

• Bezitters van de Franse nationaliteit.
• De autochtone inwoners van Frankrijk en Franse emigranten en hun nakomelingen.
• Militairen onder Frans gezag, bijvoorbeeld tijdens de Franse tijd in Nederland; dit waren niet alleen troepen met de Franse nationaliteit.

L'expression peuple français désigne, dans son acception juridique française, l'ensemble des personnes de nationalité française au nom duquel la justice est quotidiennement rendue et qui légitime toute action du gouvernement français. Toutefois, cette expression a pris dans l'histoire des sens différents, notamment avant que la notion de nationalité soit définie au cours du , et elle a été aussi largement utilisée dans des contextes politiques variés où elle ne désignait pas simplement une notion juridique.

Francuzi – naród romański zamieszkujący głównie Francję (ok. 64 mln), Wielką Brytanię (ok. 100 tys.), Katalonię (ok. 4 tys.) oraz nieliczni w Belgii, Andorze, Luksemburgu, Monako i Szwajcarii. Poza tym Francuzi żyją głównie w swoich byłych koloniach w Afryce oraz w własnych terytoriach zamorskich w Oceanii i na innych kontynentach. Około 10 milionów osób francuskiego pochodzenia mieszka w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a 5 milionów w Kanadzie. Ich ojczystym językiem jest francuski. Większość Francuzów to katolicy (chrystianizacja w II – IV wieku). Dzisiaj wielu potomków byłych imigrantów uważa się za część narodu francuskiego, są to przeważnie osoby pochodzenia afrykańskiego i arabskiego. Pozostają oni obywatelami państwa francuskiego.
