A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication or non-vocal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of, or in conjunction with, speech. Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of the body. Gestures differ from physical non-verbal communication that does not communicate specific messages, such as purely expressive displays, proxemics, or displays of joint attention. Gestures allow individuals to communicate a variety of feelings and thoughts, from contempt and hostility to approval and affection, often together with body language in addition to words when they speak.

Een gebaar is een beweging van handen, hoofd en/of andere lichaamsdelen vanuit de intentie om te communiceren of om de gesproken communicatie te ondersteunen. De bekwaamheid om gebaren te meten heet Antropo-acting. Gebaren zijn bij met name doven een onderdeel van een uitgebreide gebarentaal. Gebaren zijn dikwijls cultureel bepaald. Ze worden ook in vele godsdiensten gebruikt.

La gestuelle des doigts et des mains constitue un véritable langage, et peut être une partie de la communication non verbale (qui elle peut employer d'autres parties du cours pour exprimer: tirer la langue, par exemple). Si certains gestes ont une signification qui semble universelle, beaucoup de gestes conscients et délibérés ne peuvent, en revanche être compris que si l'on sait dans à quel référentiel sociale et culturel (de classe d'âge, de classe sociale, de genre, de métiers, de pays, etc.) ils s'adossent.
