GRASS GIS ist eine hybride, modular aufgebaute Geoinformationssystem-Software mit raster- und vektororientierten Funktionen. GRASS steht für Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, GIS für Geographical Information System.

Als Gras werden einkeimblättrige, krautige Pflanzen mit unscheinbaren Blüten und langen, schmalen Blättern bezeichnet. Einerseits ist ein Gras eine einzelne solche Pflanze oder eine unspezifische Kategorie zur biologischen Einordnung solcher Pflanzen.
