In architecture, a hall is a relatively large space enclosed by a roof and walls. In the Iron Age, a mead hall was such a simple building and was the residence of a lord and his retainers. Later, rooms were partitioned from it, and the space next to the front door became the entrance hall. Today, the (entrance) hall of a house is the space next to the front door or vestibule leading to the rooms directly and/or indirectly. Where the hall inside the front door of a house is elongated, it may be called a passage, corridor (from Spanish corredor used in El Escorial and 100 years later in Castle Howard) or hallway.

Das Foyer (französisch foyer = Feuerstelle, Herd, Brennpunkt, nach dem lateinischen focus; auch Lobby) bezeichnet einen großen Vorraum in einem öffentlichen Gebäude, besonders in einem Opernhaus, Theater, Konzertsaal oder auch Hotel. Das Foyer ist üblicherweise als Eingangshalle oder Empfangshalle unmittelbar vom Eingang des Gebäudes aus zugänglich und verfügt oft über eine integrierte Garderobe. Es dient dem Aufenthalt und der Kommunikation des Publikums während der Pausen (Funktion der Wandelhalle); gelegentlich werden dort auch Erfrischungen und ein kleiner Imbiss gereicht. In Frankreich ist dieses Wort in diesem Kontext nicht gebräuchlich, dort verwendet man es für ein Heim (Kinder-, Wohn-,...).

Hall es un término de raíz germánica (hallâ, con el significado de "cubrir" y "esconder") que designa a ciertos espacios y construcciones, siempre conectados con los usos de la primitiva casa comunal de los antiguos pueblos germánicos (mead hall) y de la plaza de mercado cubierta (market hall, en la Inglaterra rural, o los Halles de París, en Francia).
