Hardness is a measure of how resistant solid matter is to various kinds of permanent shape change when a compressive force is applied. Some materials, such as metal, are harder than others. Macroscopic hardness is generally characterized by strong intermolecular bonds, but the behavior of solid materials under force is complex; therefore, there are different measurements of hardness: scratch hardness, indentation hardness, and rebound hardness.

Härte ist der mechanische Widerstand, den ein Werkstoff der mechanischen Eindringung eines anderen Körpers entgegensetzt. Je nach der Art der Einwirkung unterscheidet man verschiedene Arten von Härte. So ist Härte nicht nur der Widerstand gegen härtere Körper, sondern auch gegen weichere und gleich harte Körper. Die Definition von Härte unterscheidet sich gegenüber der von Festigkeit, welche die Widerstandsfähigkeit eines Materials gegenüber Verformung und Trennung darstellt.

La dureté d'un matériau définit la résistance qu'oppose une surface de l'échantillon à la pénétration d'un poinçon, par exemple une bille en acier trempé (dureté Brinell) ou une pyramide en diamant (dureté Vickers). S'il y résiste bien, il est dit dur, sinon il est dit mou. La dureté se mesure sur différentes échelles selon le type de matériau considéré.
