holy order

In the Christian churches, holy orders are ordained ministries such as bishop, priest or deacon. In the Roman Catholic (Latin: sacri ordines), Eastern Catholic, Eastern Orthodox (ιερωσύνη [hierōsynē], ιεράτευμα [hierateuma], Священство [Svyashchenstvo]), Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, Old Catholic, Independent Catholic and some Lutheran churches, holy orders comprise the three ministerial orders of bishop, priest and deacon, or the sacrament or rite by which candidates are ordained to those orders. Except for Lutherans and some Anglicans, these churches regard ordination as a sacrament (the sacramentum ordinis). The Anglo-Catholic tradition within Anglicanism identifies more with the Roman Catholic position about the sacramental nature of ordination.

Das Sakrament der Weihe oder Sakrament der Ordination (, „Aufnahme in den jeweiligen “), auch Sakrament der Handauflegung, ist in vielen christlichen Konfessionen ein Sakrament, durch das der Geweihte eine Sendung und Vollmacht erhält, im Namen Christi für die Kirche zu handeln.

Wijding is een rituele handeling waardoor personen, plaatsen of zaken aan een god worden toegeheiligd, hetzij om ze te bestemmen voor de eredienst, hetzij om de genade van de god van het christendom over de betrokken personen of zaken af te smeken. Zo kan men bijvoorbeeld in het christendom gewijd worden tot diaken, priester of bisschop. Het gebruik komt vooral voor in de Katholieke Kerk en het Oosters christendom, en komt weinig voor binnen het protestantisme. De wijding tot het priesterschap is één van de zeven katholieke sacramenten.

L'ordination sacerdotale (du latin ordinatio, intégration dans un ordo, c'est-à-dire un corps constitué) est, chez les catholiques, les orthodoxes et les anglicans, l'acte liturgique qui confère le sacrement du sacerdoce chrétien, appelé sacrement de l'ordre. Celui qui confère ce sacrement - un évêque - est l'« ordinateur » ou le « consécrateur » , celui qui le reçoit est l'« ordinand ».
