honour

Honour (also honor in American English, see spelling differences; from the Latin word honor) is an abstract concept entailing a perceived quality of worthiness and respectability that affects both the social standing and the self-evaluation of an individual or corporate body such as a family, school, regiment or nation. Accordingly, individuals (or corporate bodies) are assigned worth and stature based on the harmony of their actions with a specific code of honour, and the moral code of the society at large.

Honour ist ein Begriff aus dem anglonormannischen Lehnswesen, der im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert, also nach der Eroberung Englands und vor dem Aufkommen der Peerages, eine wesentliche Rolle spielte.

Ehre bedeutet in etwa Achtungswürdigkeit oder „verdienter Achtungsanspruch“ (einer Person); sie kann jemandem als Mitglied eines Kollektivs oder Standes zuerkannt werden (Ehre des Weibes, des Edelmannes, des Handwerkers u. a. m.), sie kann aber auch (etwa durch die Nobilitierung oder eine Ordensverleihung) vom dazu Berechtigten zugesprochen werden.

L'honneur peut se définir comme un lien entre une personne et un groupe social qui lui donne son identité et lui confère le respect. L'honneur se gagne par des actes admirés par la collectivité; on subit la honte en conséquence d'actes méprisés. En ce sens, l'honneur est un attribut collectif, comme la vertu est un attribut individuel. Il peut y avoir des vertus secrètes; d'honneur secret, point. L'honneur, mais surtout le déshonneur et la honte se transmettent aux proches par contagion.
