A hormone (Greek:, "impetus") is any member of a class of signaling molecules produced by glands in multicellular organisms that are transported by the circulatory system to target distant organs to regulate physiology and behaviour. Hormones have diverse chemical structures, mainly of 3 classes: eicosanoids, steroids, and amino acid derivatives (amines, peptides, and proteins). The glands that secrete hormones comprise the endocrine signaling system. The term hormone is sometimes extended to include chemicals produced by cells that affect the same cell (autocrine or intracrine signalling) or nearby cells (paracrine signalling).

Als Hormon (zu horman ‚antreiben, erregen‘) wird ein (unterschiedlich bestimmter) biochemischer Botenstoff bezeichnet, der von speziellen Zellen produziert und abgegeben wird, und an Zellen der Erfolgsorgane spezifische Wirkungen oder Regulationsfunktionen entfaltet. Der durch diesen Signalstoff ausgelöste biologische Prozess stellt einen Spezialfall der Signaltransduktion dar. Chemisch sind Hormone niedermolekulare Verbindungen, gelegentlich auch Peptide (sogenannte Peptidhormone).

Hormonen zijn signaalstoffen die door endocriene klieren via de bloedbaan aan doelcellen of -organen worden afgegeven. Dit in tegenstelling tot neurotransmitters waarvan het effect (meestal) optreedt op de plaats van afgifte (de synaps). Ook feromonen zijn chemische boodschappers, maar dan tussen verschillende individuen van dezelfde soort. Ook planten maken hormonen.

Une hormone est une substance chimique biologiquement active, sécrétée par une glande endocrine, agissant à distance et par voie sanguine sur des récepteurs spécifiques d'une cellule cible. Elle transmet un message sous forme chimique et joue donc un rôle de messager dans l'organisme. Le terme "hormone" (du grec "hormao") a été adopté par Starling en 1905 pour désigner les substances qui assurent la liaison entre les divers organes.
