Le mot
incidence est employé dans plusieurs domaines :
- en optique et en physique du billard, l'incidence est l'angle d'un rayon incident avec la normale à une surface ;
- en aéronautique, l'incidence est l'angle formé par la corde de référence du profil d'une surface, (typiquement une aile), et le vecteur vitesse ;
- en épidémiologie, l'incidence décrit, avec la prévalence, l'importance d'une maladie dans une population et signifie chaque nouveau cas d'une maladie par an dans une population définie. En général on rapporte ce taux à personnes par an. En pratique, incidence = nombre de nouveaux cas de la maladie / personnes par an.
- En géométrie, la relation d' est une relation entre les points et les droites de l'espace considéré : un point est incident à une droite s'il est sur la droite, autrement dit si la droite passe par ce point. La géométrie affine et la géométrie projective peuvent s'axiomatiser en termes de cette relation d'incidence, le cas de la dimension 2, plan affine ou plan projectif, nécessitant un traitement particulier.
