Industry is the production of goods or services within an economy. The major source of revenue of a group or company is the indicator of its relevant industry. When a large group has multiple sources of revenue generation, it is considered to be working in different industries. Manufacturing industry became a key sector of production and labour in European and North American countries during the Industrial Revolution, upsetting previous mercantile and feudal economies. This occurred through many successive rapid advances in technology, such as the production of steel and coal.

Die Industrie ( ‚Betriebsamkeit‘, ‚Fleiß‘) bezeichnet den Teil der Wirtschaft, der gekennzeichnet ist durch die Produktion und Weiterverarbeitung von materiellen Gütern oder Waren in Fabriken und Anlagen, verbunden mit einem hohen Grad an Mechanisierung und Automatisierung – im Gegensatz zur handwerklichen Produktionsform. Den Prozess der Entwicklung und Durchsetzung industrieller Produktionsformen bezeichnet man als Industrialisierung.

De industrie (Lat Industria : bedrijvigheid, ijverig) is het deel van de economie, dat wordt gekenmerkt door de productie en verwerking van materiële goederen of artikelen in fabrieken en ondernemingen, veelal gekenmerkt door een hoge graad van mechanisering en automatisering - in tegenstelling tot de ambachtelijke vorm van de productie.

L’industrie est l'ensemble des activités socio-économiques tournées vers la production en série de biens grâce à la transformation des matières premières ou de matières ayant déjà subi une ou plusieurs transformations et à l'exploitation des sources d'énergie ; elle sous-entend :

• une certaine division du travail, contrairement à l'artisanat où la même personne assure théoriquement l'ensemble des processus : étude, fabrication, commercialisation, gestion ;
• une notion d'échelle, on parle de « quantités industrielles » lorsque le nombre de pièces identiques atteint un certain nombre ;
• l'utilisation de machines, d'abord manuelles puis automatisées, qui modifient la nature même du travail.
