Alcohol intoxication (also known as drunkenness or inebriation) is a physiological state (that may also include psychological alterations of consciousness) induced by the ingestion of ethanol (alcohol).

Dronkenschap is een lichamelijke en psychische toestand waarbij gedragsveranderingen optreden door een teveel aan alcohol in het bloed. Bij mensen treedt dit doorgaans op door het drinken van alcoholhoudende vloeistoffen, bij dieren door het eten van gistende vruchten.

L'ivresse (ou l'ébriété) correspond à un état d'exaltation correspondant à une excitation intellectuelle et physique, un trouble de l'humeur ou une incoordination des mouvements généralement dû à une ingestion massive d'alcool (éthanol) ou d'une autre substance toxique, pouvant entraîner à terme une inconscience prolongée.
L'ivresse alcoolique est à distinguer de l'ivresse des profondeurs avec laquelle elle est souvent confondue, mais qui est due à un excès d'azote dans les tissus.

Nietrzeźwość – według polskiego Kodeksu karnego z 1997 roku stan nietrzeźwości zachodzi, gdy:

• zawartość alkoholu we krwi przekracza 0,5 promila albo prowadzi do stężenia przekraczającego wartość, lub
• zawartość alkoholu w 1 dm³ wydychanego powietrza przekracza 0,25 mg albo prowadzi do stężenia przekraczającego tę wartość.
