Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the land or soil. It is used to assist in the growing of agricultural crops, maintenance of landscapes, and revegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall. Additionally, irrigation also has a few other uses in crop production, which include protecting plants against frost, suppressing weed growth in grain fields and preventing soil consolidation. In contrast, agriculture that relies only on direct rainfall is referred to as rain-fed or dryland farming.

Bewässerung ist die Versorgung des Kulturlandes mit Wasser, um das Wachstum von Pflanzen zu fördern und fehlenden Regen zu ersetzen. Dabei wird vor allem in ariden Regionen zwischen den Wendekreisen  bewässert, um den Sonnenreichtum und die hohen Temperaturen auszunutzen. Aber auch in humiden Regionen wird für sehr wasserbedürftige Pflanzen – wie Reis – oder für die Überbrückung saisonaler Trockenphasen bewässert.

Irrigatie is het met gebruikmaking van allerlei technische middelen toevoegen van water aan landbouwgewassen bij een tekort aan neerslag. Hierdoor wordt de verbouw van gewassen met een betere opbrengst mogelijk gemaakt.

L’irrigation est l'opération consistant à apporter artificiellement de l’eau à des végétaux cultivés pour en augmenter la production et permettre leur développement normal, en cas de déficit d'eau induit par un déficit pluviométrique, un drainage excessif ou une baisse de nappe, en particulier dans les zones arides.
