Kendal , anciently known as Kirkby in Kendal or Kirkby Kendal, is a market town and civil parish within the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, it is situated about south east of Windermere, north of Lancaster, north east of Barrow-in-Furness and north west of Skipton. The town lies on the River Kent, and has a total resident population of 28,586, making it the third largest settlement in Cumbria behind Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness.

Kendal ist eine Stadt im Nordwesten Englands. Sie war die größte Stadt in der Grafschaft von Westmorland, die 1974 Teil der neu gebildeten Grafschaft Cumbria wurde. Die Stadt zählt 27.521 Einwohner (2001), ist Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts South Lakeland und liegt am Fluss Kent. Von diesem Fluss hat sie auch ihren Namen. Für Jahrhunderte war Kendal ein wichtiger Marktort. Die Stadt ist der südliche Zugang zum Lake District und ist über die Bahnstrecke der Windermere Line, die von der West Coast Main Line abzweigt an das Bahnnetz angebunden. Die Stadt hat auch einen direkten Anschluss zum Motorway M6.

Kendal es una antigua ciudad y una parroquia civil en la zona de Westmorland, en el sur del condado de Cumbria, en Inglaterra . Se encuentra a orillas del río Kent del cual toma en parte su nombre (Kent-Dale, significa valle del río Kent). Respecto al nombre, otros dicen que tiene un origen celta cuyo significado sería el de "valle brillante".
