A lecture (from the French 'lecture', meaning 'reading' [process]) is an oral presentation intended to present information or teach people about a particular subject, for example by a university or college teacher. Lectures are used to convey critical information, history, background, theories and equations. A politician's speech, a minister's sermon, or even a businessman's sales presentation may be similar in form to a lecture. Usually the lecturer will stand at the front of the room and recite information relevant to the lecture's content.

Lektüre bezeichnet sowohl den Vorgang des Lesens, als auch das gelesene Objekt selbst, den Lesestoff. Eine Lektüre kann insofern aus jeder Art von geschriebenem Text bestehen. Insbesondere wird der Begriff auf klassische Printmedien, wie Bücher und Zeitungen angewendet.

Als Vorlesung bezeichnet man eine Lehrveranstaltungsform an Hochschulen. Sie wird meistens von einem Professor oder promovierten Dozenten gehalten.

Een hoorcollege is een vorm van college in het hoger onderwijs waarbij mondelinge overdracht van leerstof plaatsvindt en door één of meerdere docenten kan worden gegeven. Een hoorcollege kan plaatsvinden in een collegezaal, of bij kleinere groepen in een leslokaal.

La lecture peut être définie comme une activité psychosensorielle qui vise à donner un sens à des signes graphiques recueillis par la vision et qui implique à la fois des traitements perceptifs et cognitifs. L’efficacité de la lecture dépend principalement de deux éléments : les capacités d’identification des mots écrits et l’accès au sens de ces éléments. Ces deux facteurs étant essentiels à la lecture, si l’un des deux mécanismes est déficient, un trouble de la lecture s’ensuivra : dyslexie, hyperlexie, trouble de la compréhension, etc.
