Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality. The former principle is stressed in classical liberalism while the latter is more evident in social liberalism. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally they support ideas and programs such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free markets, civil rights, democratic societies, secular governments, and international cooperation.

Der Liberalismus (, „frei“; , „die Freiheit betreffend, freiheitlich“) ist eine Grundposition der politischen Philosophie und eine historische und aktuelle Bewegung, die eine freiheitliche politische, ökonomische und soziale Ordnung anstrebt. Hervorgegangen ist der Liberalismus aus den englischen Revolutionen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Leitziel des Liberalismus ist die Freiheit des Individuums vornehmlich gegenüber staatlicher Gewalt. Neben dem Konservatismus und dem Sozialismus wird er zu den drei großen politischen Ideologien gezählt, die sich im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert in Europa herausgebildet haben.

Het liberalisme is een politiek-maatschappelijke stroming die ontstaan is in de Verlichting van de 18e eeuw. Het brak in de 19e eeuw in Europa en Noord-Amerika door als dominante stroming toen het de burger wilde emanciperen ten koste van het Ancien Régime. Vandaag de dag is het liberalisme een van de dominante ideologieën. Het liberalisme is een brede ideologie met meerdere substromingen; de invulling van het begrip verschilt sterk per land en cultuur.
